The disciples are getting into trouble, because the Temple leaders observe that they are not washing their hands in the ritual way. It wasn’t just a hygiene issue, but rather it was insulting to the leaders because it seemed like the disciples were intentionally ignoring the rules and laws that made them special, unique, and indicated their being the chosen people of God. Jesus, however, points out that these rules and laws have their place and purpose, but that the most important law was considered “THE” law-the law or commandment that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart and mind and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. For Jesus, the command to LOVE was the first and foremost command-it is what is our calling and privilege as disciples of Jesus. ANYTHING that gets in the way of love is not what God wants of us. May God guide us as we are led by the Spirit to serve God and share Christ’s LOVE with all!!!!
