Today our gospel shares that story that we know all-too-well-the death of John the Baptist whose head was then offered on a gold platter. King Herod orders John’s death, not because he wanted to, but because he bowed to the pressure of his wife and his friends. King Herod worshiped the earthly kingdom and the temporary things it provides like money, fame, and power. Jesus and John set a higher example for us to follow-to place our faith and trust in the hands of a loving, saving, and forgiving God who is with us in all times in all ways. It may not always be easy to follow Jesus and remain faithful, but ultimately we know it is the only way to live that brings joy and hope and peace for now and to eternity-as together we are led by the Spirit to serve God and share Christ’s love with all.
