Today we hear Jesus giving us a parable about gardening to explain the kingdom of God. Our gospel says, to paraphrase, that it is a like a farmer who plants seeds, then gets some rest, and it grows, but he doesn’t know how. That’s powerfully good news for us. It means that as disciples who are called to be led by the Spirit to serve God and share Christ’s love with all that we do the best we can-spreading the seeds of God’s love as best we can-but that ultimately it is in God’s hands in the ways it will sprout and grow. We may not always see the results of our hard work or the fruits it will bear, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t making a difference in Jesus’ name. We are called to be the disciples of Jesus by our Baptism and to live the life to which he has called us in love and service, and then we rest assured that God will do the rest! Thanks be to God!
