In our gospel of John, Jesus’ upending tables in the Temple and throwing out the money-changers wasn’t just an opportunity for those opposed to him to gain evidence against him. It is a significant event that revealed who Jesus was and what he wanted to do. Throughout the gospel of John, Jesus upends traditional ideas and concepts about the life of faith and throws out the old suppositions and reminds people of God’s true intent for their lives-to LOVE him by LOVING others. Again and again, Jesus calls people of faith back to the concept of loving and caring passionately for others as the foundation for living out a life of faith in God. Jesus and his love may upset and disrupt preconceived ideas about the life of faith-but if the faithful life equals a loving life, we are on the right track.
