STATION IV: Jesus Meets his Mother
This encounter between the Blessed Virgin Mary and her son is a reflection of the unconditional, overwhelming love that God the Father has for each of us. She suffers as her son suffers and yet she continues to be an example of faith, obedience to God, and faithful service to God by sharing her only Son with the world. Mary’s heart is broken-as many parental hearts break when children are sent to war, sick or dying, falling into the abyss of drugs or alcohol or despair-as parents’ hearts break over the sufferings of their children. But in the midst of this pain and sorrow, God is here-reminding us that we are never alone-not Mary, not Jesus, not any one of us. Our invitation as disciples of Jesus who walk in the way of the cross is this: how might we support and care for those parents who suffer as their children suffer?
