Jesus is baptized and then immediately the Spirit sends him into the Wilderness. This parallels our lives. Our Baptism is filled with the Spirit when we are claimed by God into the life and death and resurrection of Christ, and God says he is pleased with us, his beloved children. Then life begins-a life that sometimes feels like a Wilderness with illness, fear, separation, isolation. But we are reminded today that as Jesus is accompanied by the Spirit and God’s holy angels who minister to him in the Wilderness, so too, God’s Spirit and his holy angels are with us in good times and difficult times. His journey is ours-and it is in the Wilderness of life, remembering that we are not alone because of our Baptism, that we are strengthened, encouraged, and emboldened to continue to serve God and share Christ’s love with all.
