That certainly was a “WOW!” moment for the disciples-on a mountaintop, Jesus glowing, joined by Moses and Elijah, a cloud with the voice of God saying; “This is my Son, the Beloved-listen to him!” Wow! That mountaintop moment with it’s Wow factor changed the lives of Peter and James and John forever. So how may we prepare for the Wow moments, the mountaintop events in our own faith journey?
First, we need to be in the presence of Jesus, and then we must listen to Jesus. We must recognize that the Wow moments change and affect us, but they don’t last forever, and so we take what we learn there down into the valley where we need to be. We are also invited to expect to meet Jesus as he comes to us-in the words of forgiveness at the Font, in the person next to us, in his Word, in the blessing of his very Body and Blood given and shed for us. In our discipleship, those elements of life with Jesus allow us to take those Wow moments with us as we journey from the mountaintop back down into the valley as together we serve God and share Christ’s love with all.
